I've been sitting with a question for a few weeks now, and it won't let go of me: what if the Revolt of 1857 hadn't been a "mutiny" that got crushed, but an actual war of liberation that we won? Not "won" in the sense we're taught to feel good about it in a Class 8 history chapter. I mean genuinely won — Delhi holds, Lucknow holds, the British get pushed into the sea by 1858 or 1859, and the East India Company simply ceases to exist as a political force on this subcontinent.
